Positive economic benefits from Goulburn Recreation Area ...

The Goulburn Recreation Area will contribute $43 million to the local economy and community over the period 2014 to 2031, as outlined in a report on the effects of activities held at the popular facility.

Completed by economist Dr Robert Noakes, the estimated figure is based on opportunities provided by existing facilities plus the new Goulburn Recreation Area multi-function centre, which will commence soon.

?With over 40 TAB greyhound race meetings, a proposal for 20 TAB harness racing meets, the Goulburn Show and Goulburn Rodeo, plus regular dressage, dog, poultry and basketball events, the Goulburn Recreation Area is a major drawcard for visitors to Goulburn,? Chair of the Goulburn Recreation Area Management Committee Cr Margaret O?Neill said.

?The new multi-function centre will not only enhance the Recreation Area for the many existing users, but also help us expand the activities on offer. As the economist?s report outlines, the visitors attracted will provide major benefits to the local economy.

?As well as the many regular events on offer, there are also numerous major activities held each year such as swap meets, sports and livestock events. Council is also regularly in negotiation with event organisers for attractions such as car shows, including the popular Hot Rods. Things have come a long way at the site since I first played basketball there as a teenager,? Cr O?Neill said.

?The report, titled ?Economic Assessment of the Goulburn Recreation Area? was prepared by economist Dr Robert Noakes of Dr. Robert R. Noakes & Associates. It indicates that the investment of $5.7 million over 20 years for the multi-function centre is both economically justifiable and robust, underpinned by a range of conservatively estimated economic benefits.

Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Cr Geoff Kettle said the Recreation Area was a facility the community should be proud of.

?Following the completion of the multi-function centre, Goulburn Recreation Area will be an even more valuable facility for the community. It will not only enhance opportunities for locals with a myriad of interests, but will also contribute significantly to the local economy,? Cr Kettle said.

?It should also be highlighted that many of the facilities at the Recreation Area have been built through partnerships between local community organisations, Council, State and Federal Government, plus organisations such as the harness and greyhound racing industry bodies.? It is a true community facility and with the new multi-function centre in place, it will be a site we can all be truly proud of,? Cr Kettle said.
