Deadline for Twitter on giving records to NY court

(AP) ? Twitter is facing a deadline to hand over about three months' worth of an Occupy Wall Street protester's tweets or faces steep fines from a New York judge.

Judge Matthew Sciarrino Jr. ruled earlier this year that the social networking site must turn over the records in the case of Malcolm Harris, charged with disorderly conduct. A hearing was scheduled for Friday.

The Manhattan district attorney's office has said Harris' messages could show whether he was aware of the police orders he's charged with disregarding. The case involved a mass protest over the Brooklyn Bridge last fall where about 700 people were arrested.

Twitter had said the case could put it in the unwanted position of having to take on legal fights that users could otherwise conduct on their own.
