"Fiscal cliff" talks turn sour, Obama threatens veto

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Talks to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis stalled on Wednesday as President Barack Obama accused opponents of holding a personal grudge against him while the top Republican negotiator called the president "irrational."

As a year-end deadline nears, Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner are locked in intense bargaining over a possible deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of harsh tax hikes and automatic spending cuts that could badly damage an already weak economy.

Obama said he was puzzled over what was holding up the talks and told Boehner's Republicans to stop worrying about scoring "a point against the president" or forcing him into concessions "just for the heck of it."

"It is very hard for them to say yes to me," he told a news conference in the White House. "At some point, you know, they've got to take me out of it."

The rise in tensions threatens to unravel significant progress made over the last week.

Boehner and Obama have each offered substantial concessions that have made a deal look within reach. Obama has agreed to cuts in benefits for seniors, while Boehner has conceded to Obama's demand that taxes rise for the richest Americans.

However, the climate of goodwill has evaporated since Republicans announced plans on Tuesday to put an alternative tax plan to a vote in the House this week that would largely disregard the progress made so far in negotiations.

On Wednesday, Obama threatened to veto the Republican measure, known as "Plan B," if Congress approved it.

Boehner's office slammed Obama for opposing their plan, which would raise taxes on households making more than $1 million a year and is a concession from longstanding Republican opposition to increasing any tax rates.

"The White House's opposition to a backup plan ... is growing more bizarre and irrational by the day," Boehner said through his spokesman, Brendan Buck.

Boehner expressed confidence the House would pass the legislation on Thursday. He urged Obama to "get serious" about a balanced deficit reduction plan.

Wall Street is on edge over the fiscal cliff talks although investors still expect a deal. The S&P 500 stock index slipped 0.76 percent on Wednesday.

Business leaders have descended on Washington to lobby for a deal to avoid going over the cliff while putting public finances on a more sustainable path. Without an agreement to narrow deficits over the long run, the United States could eventually lose investors' trust, triggering a debt crisis.

An acrimonious presidential campaign that culminated in Obama's re-election on November 6 has added to the bad blood in Washington between Obama and congressional Republicans.

The two sides also clashed bitterly last year over the government's limit on borrowing - known as the debt ceiling - an episode that nearly led the nation to default on its debt.

On Wednesday, Obama said the fiscal cliff must not get bogged down with negotiations over the debt ceiling, an issue that must be dealt with again early next year.

But Boehner's offer to raise the debt ceiling enough for another year of borrowing is facing opposition from a large group of Republicans, a House Republican aide said.

LITMUS TEST

Any fiscal cliff agreement by Obama and the Republican leadership would need the support of their parties' rank and file in Congress, and Thursday's vote on Plan B will be a test of Boehner's ability to deliver votes on any eventual deal.

Boehner faces opposition from Republican Tea Party conservatives over his concession to raise tax rates. But in a sign some conservatives are coming around to Boehner's position, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist gave his blessing to the bill.

Other conservative groups, including the influential Club for Growth, are urging Republicans to vote against Plan B.

Obama and Boehner appear to have bridged their biggest ideological differences but remain hung up on the mix of tax hikes and spending cuts meant to narrow the budget gap.

"What separates us is probably a few hundred billion dollars," Obama said.

The White House wants taxes to rise on household incomes above $400,000 a year, a concession from Obama's opening proposal for a $250,000 income threshold.

If a deal is not reached soon, some $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts are set to begin next month.

Senior administration officials described negotiations as at a standstill and Obama warned he would ask everyone involved in the talks, "what it is that's holding it up?"

Still, the top Republican in the Senate said a resolution to the stalemate could come by the end of the week.

"There's still enough time for us to finish all of our work before this weekend, if we're all willing to stay late and work hard," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Many Democrats dislike the president's offer to reduce benefits to seniors, although some political allies of Obama have given signs they feel they could swallow this concession.

"I don't like these particular changes," said Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen, a member of the House leadership from Maryland. But he added: "What people are seeing is the president willing to compromise in order to get things done."

Samsung Galaxy S III?s Display Better Than iPhone 5?s On Paper, But Users Unlikely To Notice

sgs3vsiphone5According to a new report from research firm IHS, Apple's iPhone 5 display lags behind the Samsung Galaxy S III's on the important measure of color gamut, which creates a more vibrant, crisp image with better overall color saturation, but the difference in terms of how users perceive the margin could actually be negligible, and is unlikely to alter buying decisions.

More and more people are learning that running a successful home business enterprise is a great way to make money. Although this might be what is happening, they are not sure on where to start. To reach your goal, you should arm yourself with as much knowledge and information as possible. The information in this article is the first step toward your learning.

To keep business and personal emails separate, create a business email account that uses your domain name for work related emails only. In addition, access your emails in different ways. For instance, you can read your personal mail from gmail and you can get your business mail from Outlook.

Home business forums can be a great resource for new information. This will allow you to interact with others in the same position. Many home business owners have the same problems and it is good to have people to share concerns with.

TIP! You should start your business from home while keeping your old job. When starting a new business it is advisable to continue working until your new business begins generating profit.

Always set aside some of your profits for tax purposes. Taxes will be around 15-20 % of your total income, you should save before hand so you do not have to struggle to get it at tax time.

Soliciting support from your family is crucial to the success of your new home based business. Home businesses take a lot of time and effort to get up and running. Unless you receive support from your family members, even just providing you with the time you need to do your work, it will not be possible for you to be successful in running a work from home business.

It is important to keep you customers informed about your business, without over-informing them. Allow your customers to decide whether they would like to receive newsletters and information about your specials and discounts. The last thing you want to do is become a nuisance to your customers by overloading them.

TIP! Business trips can be a legitimate and welcome diversion. If a trip is for business purposes rather than simply for pleasure, you may be able to deduct some expenses on your taxes.

It might seem like a vacation being able to send correspondence from home, but eventually you may come to miss interacting with others on a daily basis. Try to get out of the house during the week to personally stay in touch with others.

When you are running a business out of your home, you need to make sure to follow all safety regulations, especially if there are children living there. This may require an investment in certain equipment, but it is necessary for your family. This is quite important for both your family?s safety and to avoid accidents that can cause you to lose money on your business. If you have a home office you might still get your business inspected.

Taking advantage of the power and the reach of the Internet is one of the better ways you can market your business, ensuring you are getting as much income as possible. There are many ways you can do this. Writing a blog or articles to support your business is one way. Becoming known through forums will also help. An email list is a must. All these efforts will increase the visibility, and therefore the profits, of your business.

TIP! Online forums specifically for home business owners can be a great source of encouragement and advice. You will learn that there are many online places to meet up with other home business owners.

If you have a online business, record all of your business driving. Driving for business is actually a viable tax deduction. By claiming your business travel expenses on your taxes, you can save a lot of money.

Have a regular work schedule. Put your working hours on the list so that you will not get burned out. While it can be tempting to pour all your time and energy into your new business, be careful not to overwork yourself. Try spending some time with the family instead of working.

Track all of your expenses to save money. This includes car mileage related to your business and internet service. When you?re a business owner, you can use many of your business-related expenses as tax deductions. There is no reason to give your money away to the government. Keep track of all those little expenses. They could add up to big savings.

TIP! You have to know that a home business requires you to spend a lot of time on the phone. For this reason, it is vital to setup a separate business phone line coming into your home.

Search online to get the supplies you need for your home business at wholesale cost. You can find a ton of relevant information on the Internet. Search for deals for the products and materials you need. The business license you have will give you the power to buy supplies at wholesale.

Now that you have a greater idea of what you need to do to create and manage a work from home business, you should start feeling like you can accomplish your home business enterprise goals. Remember that the information you learned is only going to work if you apply it. If you follow the tips in this article, then your online business should succeed

You should research all the requirements needed for running your home business before you get started. Leave no stone unturned when evaluating the potential business opportunity.

TIP! If you have an external business, list that address in place of a P.O.

Rumor: Apple to announce mini iPad on Oct. 17

5 hrs.

We've heard plenty of rumors about a mini iPad, but so far Apple's been quiet when it comes to confirming the device's existence. Now we're hearing that the Cupertino-based company might finally announce the new tablet on Oct. 17.

According to Fortune's?Philip Elmer-DeWitt,?a major Apple investor claims to have heard from multiple sources that members of the press will receive invitations to an Apple event on Oct. 10. History suggests that this would mean that the actual event would have to take place on Oct. 17?and that whatever's announced would likely hit shelves on the Friday of the following week, which would be Oct. 26.

(It may not be a coincidence that this timing?aligns?far?too closely with the launch of Microsoft's own Surface tablet, a possibility that no doubt is unnerving some Microsoft marketing folks.)

Not much is known about the mini?iPad (or "iPad Mini") so far though.?Based on the most reliable (and common) reports, this tablet should be close to eight inches diagonally (rather than 9.7 inches like the current models), have a plain?? as in?non-Retina???display, and be priced somewhere?in the $250 range (to compete with Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's newest Kindle Fire).

Leaked parts suggest?that the device will have a Lightning connector like the iPhone 5 and be offered in your choice of black or white.?Both 9to5?Mac's Seth Weintraub and Apple watcher?John Gruber?agree that chances are high that this smaller tablet will look a lot like a large iPod Touch, with?a smaller bezel, but the operating system will likely be identical to a standard-size iPad.

That's all we know for now. We'll keep Oct. 17 circled on our calendars in hopes that we'll find out more once it comes around.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

SIMUL8 Corporation to Develop Landmark Lean Healthcare Product

Boston, MA, September 30, 2012 ?(PR.com)? SIMUL8 Corporation, producers of process improvement simulation software, today announced the development of a new healthcare improvement product designed with nurses in mind; allowing them to use simulation and lean to improve patient care.

In the U.S. alone $750 billion is wasted each year on unnecessary healthcare costs, according to a recent report by the Institute of Medicine, with $130 billion of that attributed to the inefficient delivery of care highlighting the need for action. The addition of this new lean product for nurses means SIMUL8 now provides a software tool for every level of a healthcare organization to improve planning, increase efficiency, and reduce waste.

The new product is being developed in partnership with major healthcare organizations from the US and the UK and will see representatives from all parties working closely together to design, develop and market the software.

Using the software, nurses will be able to quickly create a computer simulation of their working environment and test how they can improve the efficiency of every day processes giving back time to focus on caring for patients.

?Static tools of this type have existed before, for example spaghetti diagrams, but now powered by simulation we can make these tools dynamic,? said Frances Sneddon, SIMUL8 Corporation?s CTO. ?Simulation will add visualization through dynamic result displays and animation of the process to bring them to life. It also helps with the communication of improvements to everyone involved in the team and provides better evidence to decision-makers.?

Claire Cordeaux, SIMUL8 Lead for Healthcare, said ?Our aim is to put simulation in the hands of decision-makers using our understanding of healthcare and simulation to ensure that tools are easily used and intuitive. In this case we are really excited to have developed a simulation tool that can be used by nurses themselves. We already have a strong presence in healthcare across the world, and this landmark product shows our continued commitment to healthcare improvement.?

This 1964 Ford Mustang Ad Could Not Possibly Be More Boring

This 1964 Ford Mustang Ad Could Not Possibly Be More Boring I've been effusive in my praise of the first-gen Mustang in previous posts. I think it fully deserves the credit. The original Mustang was one of the most important cars ever made, and its design still looks great today. The baby boomer generation must have seen it as sex on wheels compared to the hulking, staid sedans their parents drove.

So how do you sell the Mustang to young people? Simple: you make the most boring commercial you possibly can. Wait, what?

That's exactly the approach Ford took when they made this ad, and it is quite possibly the most boring ad for a sporty car that I have ever seen. We see a young-ish stylist slaving over blueprints, striving to give the car a look of "total performance." Then the narrator goes on and on about the padded instrument panel, the sculpted side panels, the round rear openings and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Get to the point, skip. I want to hear about engines and horsepower quotes. I want to see the car driving really fast. I want to see the driver actually having fun!

Oh look, it's driving next to some horses. I think I just fell asleep in my cereal bowl.

Luckily, Ford didn't need great ads for the Mustang to be a hit. The car started a revolution almost overnight, and for that, we're all better off. All I know is that Don Draper wouldn't have signed off on this ad. Way too boring.

What do you think of this ad, and classic Mustangs in general?

Update: As a few of you astute folks have pointed out in the comments, this may have been a dealer training film rather than a TV ad. Good eye! But it's still boring. Really, really boring.

(AP) ? Don Trachte's cowlick has been tamed. Mary Hall is no longer a towhead. Butch Corbett is still thin, but not the beanpole he once was. And Tom Paquin's carrot top is thinner and grayer.

Twenty or so people who were children when they posed in the 1940s and '50s for their neighbor Norman Rockwell in the Vermont town of Arlington are reuniting there Saturday to share their memories of the great American artist who once lived in their midst.

Rockwell captured scenes of everyday life in his paintings and illustrations for covers of the Saturday Evening Post, for the Boy Scouts and for its publication Boys' Life, art now considered the very definition of Americana. He would pay his neighbors $5 a pop to appear in Hallmark cards, in calendars and on magazine covers that ended up gracing the coffee tables and littering the tree houses of millions of magazine readers young and old.

"The Saturday Evening Post came out weekly, and we couldn't wait to get it to see what was on the cover," said Hall, who posed for Rockwell four times. "You could always recognize who it was."

She appeared as a blond girl wrapped in a quilt and being carried out of a flood by a Boy Scout in an image that became a cover of Boys' Life, and as a teenager in a skirt, white blouse, bobby socks and loafers on a Post cover from 1948. It was called "Christmas Homecoming" and showed people welcoming home a young man who's carrying a suitcase full of dirty laundry.

An estimated 300 people from the area modeled for Rockwell during his 14 years in the southern Vermont town. Of the 70 or so still living, the oldest is 93 (he can't make it to the reunion). Many still live in and around Arlington.

Among the models planning to join in is Mary Whalen, who posed for the popular image of a rugged-looking school girl with braids and a black eye, waiting outside a principal's office.

The former models have gotten together before, but this weekend is special. They have been invited to view a new gallery of Rockwell prints and memorabilia that is taking the place of a recently closed Rockwell museum. The new owners are treating them to a turkey lunch in honor of Rockwell's famous painting of an excited family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner.

"I think it's important that the models keep the tradition of the image that Vermont, Arlington in particular, was important in Norman Rockwell's biography. That while he lived in Arlington he did his best work, probably ... and his local models were Arlington people," said James "Buddy" Edgerton, 82, who lived next door to Rockwell, his wife and three sons and modeled for him at least a dozen times.

Rockwell was a full-fledged member of the town, attending school basketball games and square dances, and had a great sense of humor, his neighbors recall. But as one of America's foremost artists, he could be as precise as any high-fashion photographer.

He would first have the models photographed and then would sketch a drawing. Sometimes the session in his studio took minutes, sometimes several hours. He always had a pipe in his mouth, and he joked around with the kids to make them comfortable.

"Rockwell had these images in his head, and he wanted you to smile or be wide-eyed in a certain way. You have to be a little actor, you see, and I probably was a little embarrassed," said Trachte, who was 5 or 6 when he posed for a painting of a little boy and girl in pajamas, holding hands and peering up at Santa Claus. Years later, Trachte and his brother found a Rockwell hidden in a wall at his parents' house; "Breaking Home Ties" sold at auction in 2006 for $15.4 million.

Rockwell knew just what he wanted, instructing the children to sit or stand in certain positions with particular expressions and to wear certain clothing, often providing Scout uniforms, or in one case, the velvet outfit that Hall wore for the cover of an edition of the book "Little Lord Fauntleroy."

"I find his detail just amazing," said Hall, whose father was a real estate agent who sold Rockwell his first and second home in town.

She noted that Rockwell managed to paint the small piece of tape around her leg from a sprained ankle that appeared above her bobby sock: "He didn't miss the details."

Edgerton ? who went on to write the memoir "The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families," about a farm boy growing up next door to the Rockwells ? modeled for his neighbor mostly as a Scout, with his image published in four calendars.

The last time he modeled was in 1964, after Rockwell had moved about 65 miles away to Stockbridge, Mass., now home to the Norman Rockwell Museum. Edgerton appeared as a Scoutmaster with his son, then 9, in a painting called "Growth of a Leader," showing four profiles of a Scout progressing from a child to an adult with a graying sideburn ? much like Edgerton has today.

"He was a wonderful guy," Edgerton said. "He made you feel you were the most important person in the world when you were doing it."

Saudi starts expelling Nigerian women pilgrims

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia on Friday began expelling over a thousand Nigerian women on religious pilgrimage to the country because they had arrived without male guardians, the first time it sent back such a large group in enforcement of strict rules governing women.

The government ministry that oversees the Hajj pilgrimage said the 1,100 women had violated a longstanding law by travelling without an immediate male relative, adding that females of all nationalities under the age of 45 must have a male guardian during the Hajj pilgrimage.

"This is a rule that is generally applied to women who have applied for a visa to enter the kingdom," the Hajj ministry said in a statement.

In Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to travel without a male guardian, such as a father, brother, uncle or husband, or at the very least permission from such a relative. In the past, authorities had allowed women over 45 to perform the annual pilgrimage without the guardians as long as they were in groups with male tour operators and pilgrimage officials.

The annual pilgrimage, which this year comes at the end of October, is a religious duty for Muslims who are supposed to make the trip once in their lives. Many arrive weeks in advance.

The expulsions may set the stage for a diplomatic confrontation.

Nigeria's pilgrimage commission says a bilateral agreement exempts its female nationals from the rule, and the country is sending a delegation to Saudi Arabia to discuss the expulsions. They also say some women have been turned back because they appeared to not have sufficient proof of being married despite being accompanied by their husbands.

The women, who arrived in the city of Jiddah in three groups, were held after landing at the international airport starting Monday. Saudi authorities said they would be allowed to return if they came back with guardians, but did not signal any flexibility or recognize the Nigerian claim of an exemption to the guardianship rules.

"The rules of Hajj have been in place for many years and nothing has emerged that requires us not to abide by them," said Hatem bin Hassan Qadi, deputy Hajj minister. He added that he hoped pilgrimage commissions around the world abide by the requirements of the trip before pilgrims' departure.

Rules limiting the independence of Saudi women are far-reaching in the kingdom. They may not study abroad unless a male guardian approves and accompanies them throughout their studies. Government-run hospitals perform surgery on women only with approval of a male guardian, except in emergencies. If a husband or father is not available, mothers turn to their sons for approval to work or travel.

More than 2 million Muslims descend on Saudi Arabia's Mecca for the pilgrimage, with around 1.5 million of them coming from outside the Gulf region.

Pilgrims often save their entire lives for the trip and Muslim philanthropists donate to enable those who cannot afford it. The Hajj, which lasts five days, costs anywhere between $4,000 upward to more than $25,000 per person.

Animals suspected in spread of new virus

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Health Protection Agency has published an early genetic sequence of the new respiratory virus related to SARS that shows it is most closely linked to bat viruses, and scientists say camels, sheep or goats might end up being implicated too.

So far, there are no signs the virus will be as deadly as SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed hundreds of people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 global outbreak.

In Geneva, WHO spokesman Glenn Thomas told reporters Friday that so far the signs are that the virus is "not easily transmitted from person to person" ? but analyses are ongoing.

Global health officials suspect two victims from the Middle East may have caught it from animals.

"It's a logical possibility to consider any animals present in the region in large numbers," said Ralph Baric, a coronavirus expert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Biologists now need to go into the area and take samples from any animals they can get their hands on, including camels and goats," he said. Baric said it was crucial to find out how widespread the virus is in animals and what kind of contact might be risky for people.

Baric suggested bats might be spreading the virus directly to humans since the two confirmed infections happened months apart. "If there was an established transmission pattern from other animals, we probably would have seen a lot more cases," he said.

The World Health Organization said it is considering the possibility the new coronavirus sickened humans after direct contact with animals. The agency is now working with experts in the Middle East to figure out how the two confirmed cases got infected but could not share details until the investigation was finished.

One patient was a Saudi Arabian man who died several months ago while the other is a Qatari national who traveled to Saudi Arabia before falling ill and is currently in critical but stable condition in a London hospital.

Earlier this week, WHO issued a global alert asking doctors to be on guard for any potential cases of the new respiratory virus, which also causes kidney failure.

Saudi officials have already warned that next month's annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions to Saudi Arabia from all around the world, could allow the virus to spread. As a precautionary measure, they are advising pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

Experts said knowing where a virus comes from provides clues on how to stop it.

"This means we could prevent the fire before it starts instead of rushing towards it with fire trucks and water hoses afterwards," said Michael Osterholm, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Minnesota.

Osterholm said it was possible bats had simply passed on the virus from other animals and that there could be a complicated transmission chain that ultimately ended in humans.

Viruses reproduce as they infect animals and people, giving them more chances to evolve into a deadlier version.

"We don't know enough about coronaviruses to predict which mutations might make them more lethal or transmissible," Osterholm said. "But you don't want to tempt genetic fate with microbes because you're bound to lose most times."

Customer Spotlight ? CONCERN

Customer Spotlight ? CONCERN

In previous Customer Spotlight videos, we?ve talked to several businesses using email marketing in their daily workflow ? a wine school, an SEO firm, a restaurant.

Today?s spotlight is a bit different. Rather than a typical for-profit business, we wanted to check out how a non-profit used email marketing.

Enter CONCERN, a non-profit foster care agency. Their Willow Grove, PA branch just happens to use AWeber for their email marketing needs, but then again, just how does a non-profit use email marketing (marketing, after all, is usually associated with for-profit companies)?

CONCERNed About Kids

CONCERN helps foster kids and parents with a variety of placement, counseling and residential programs. We sat down with Diane Devlin (CONCERN?s Willow Grove Regional Director) and Rachel Acquaviva (CONCERN?s Willow Grove Office Supervisor) to find out how CONCERN uses email for their day-to-day business needs.

As you just saw, the potential of email marketing is not just limited to a for-profit business. Whether you?re running a charitable organization, an educational institution or a foster care center, email marketing can help you reach out and raise support from people interested in your content.

DIY Coolness: A Hot Tub in the Living Room ... - AOL Real Estate

Matthew Cole hot tub living room

So, you're pulling up the old, dingy carpet in your living room when -- whoopsies! -- you accidentally damage the floor. What do you do? Well, duh, you patch it up, right? That's not the memo Matthew Cole got.

"I thought, what a lot of wasted area," Cole, 35, recalled of the time in 2003 when he was ripping up the carpet in his Colorado Springs home. "It would be cool to do something with it."

And that's how it all started: a simple carpet replacement job snowballed into an outrageous DIY project -- that ended three months later with a hot tub in the middle of his living room.

As Cole looked at a small hole that was left in the living room floor after he ripped up the carpet, he began to get ideas.

"It escalated pretty quickly," he said. "One of my friends had recently gotten a hot tub, so I thought, why not put a hot tub out there?" (Story continues after the gallery below.)

He enlisted a few friends with expertise in home improvement, and together they cut a hole in the floor big enough for a hot tub. Beneath the floor was a crawl space where they poured a concrete platform for the hot tub to sit on so it wouldn't be dangling from the floor frame (which could tear down the whole floor).

But then there was the issue of the floor itself: Condensation from the hot tub would rot the wood. Solution? Tile the whole floor.

Cole and his friends laid slate tile on the living room floor while continuing to prep the hole for the hot tub. Once the concrete platform was dry, they laid a layer of cinder blocks to achieve the perfect height for the hot tub. Then, it came time to install the hot tub.

"We lowered it down kind of like a coffin," Cole said. "That's when I realized what we were doing."

The reality hit him: Yes, there was a hot tub in his living room. But it was the point of no return. And, hey, since they'd gone that far, why not go even farther?

"The fireplace just didn't go," Cole said. The brick fireplace in front of the new hot tub area stuck out like a sore thumb against the slate tile. So he began to recover it with fake stone. Finally, he removed the glass doors covering the hearth of the fireplace and placed a TV there.

After three months of work, Cole had transformed his living room into a unique party area. And it caused quite the stir among his circle of friends.

"All my married friends thought it was a bad idea, and all my single friends loved it," Cole said.

He had planned to install a high-capacity exhaust fan in the living room along with a humidistat to control the humidity from the hot tub. But, he said, he never needed to.

"The hot tub doesn't generate the kind of steam that people think," he said.

Cole has moved since his 2003 hot tub project, but the crazy home feature has helped him rent out his Colorado Springs pad. He said that his renter loves it and uses it all the time.

"My renter had a party there last year and has funny pics of everyone in the hot tub."

The sorry truth about military drones

From Glenn Greenwald, a must-read:

A vitally important and thoroughly documented new report on the impact of Obama?s drone campaign has just been released by researchers at NYU School of Law and Stanford University Law School. Entitled ?Living Under Drones: Death, Injury and Trauma to Civilians From US Drone Practices in Pakistan?, the report details the terrorizing effects of Obama?s drone assaults as well as the numerous, highly misleading public statements from administration officials about that campaign. The study?s purpose was to conduct an ?independent investigations into whether, and to what extent, drone strikes in Pakistan conformed to international law and caused harm and/or injury to civilians?.

There is much more at the link.? And there is this:

?American progressives cheered loudly when a similar question was posed by Al Gore in a widely celebrated 2006 speech he gave on the Washington mall denouncing the Bush/Cheney assault on civil liberties:

??If the president has the inherent authority to eavesdrop on American citizens without a warrant, imprison American citizens on his own declaration, kidnap and torture, then what can?t he do???

What has always amazed me about that is that, there, Gore was merely decrying Bush?s mere eavesdropping on Americans and his detention of them without judicial review. Yet here Obama is claiming the power to decide who should be killed without a shred of transparency, oversight, or due process ? a power that is being continuously used to kill civilians, including children ? and many of these same progressives now actually cheer for that.

I praise Kevin Drum for his good work on this, but too many others cannot bring themselves to utter much protest or, for that matter, defense, if that is indeed their view.

On foreign policy, here are some related points (too polemic for my tastes but still some good points) and no I am not trying to suggest Romney would be superior on these issues nor am I endorsing any other candidate.

Poet Helena Mesa to read from debut collection at APSU on October ...

?

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN ? In the spring of 2006, Austin Peay State University?s literary journal, Zone 3, published the poem, ?Sway This Night,? by Pittsburgh native Helena Mesa. That work is now part of Mesa?s acclaimed new collection, ?Horse Dance Underwater,? which former Maryland Poet Laureate Michael Collier called a ?virtuosic first book? that leaves readers ?breathless, exhilarated and transformed.?

At 4:00pm on October 11th, Mesa will deliver a reading of her work at the APSU Honors Commons as part of the University?s Fall Visiting Writer?s Series. A book signing will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

Mesa, the daughter of Cuban parents, grew up in Pittsburgh but later earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Houston, and her poems have appeared in major literary journals, such as Third Coast, Indiana Review, Barrow Street and Poet Lore.

?Mesa?s poems are artfully suspended between lyric and narrative, between humans and animals, between Latin America and the U.S., between desire and the difficult of its fulfillment,? Guggenheim fellow and National Book Award-winning poet Mark Doty said. ??Horse Dance Underwater? is an inventive, musical and powerful debut.?

Qatar calls for Arab-led military intervention in Syria ? RT

United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in New York (Reuters/Mike Segar)

(16.6Mb) embed video

The ongoing violence in Syria is the main issue at the 67th UN General Assembly. Despite calls by the UN chief to end the violence, Qatar urged an Arab-led military intervention in the country and Western leaders pledged support for rebel groups.

?The Security Council failed to reach an effective position. In view of this, I think that it is better for the Arab countries themselves to interfere,? said Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar. Al-Thani urged neighboring nations to act ?out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties? and bring an end to the violence in Syria.

Earlier, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani said in an interview with CNN that a no-fly zone over Syria is needed as a ?Plan B.?

Western leaders have taken a uniformly hard line on what they see as the need to oust Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. French President Francois Hollande called on the UN to immediately provide protection for Syrian opposition groups and rebel-held territories.

?I know one thing is certain: The Syrian regime will never again take its place in the council of nations,? Hollande said. ?Without any delay, I call upon the United Nations to provide immediately to the Syrian people all the support it asks of us and to protect liberated zones.?

?How many more deaths will we wait for before we act? How can we let the paralysis of the United Nations continue?? he said, likely alluding to three instances where Russia and China vetoed UN Security Council resolutions on Syria they deemed biased.

In August, France began channeling aid to Syria?s rebel-held regions. While Hollande called for Western and Arab countries to intervene in Syria, he also criticized Iran for doing just that: "It is clear that we have all the proof we need that Iran is intervening by human and material means in Syria, and this is unacceptable."

Hollande also reiterated his promise to recognize a ?provisional Syrian government,? a step that could lead to direct military support for the Syrian rebels.

US President Barack Obama leveled further harsh criticism against Assad: "As we meet here, we again declare that the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a new dawn can begin.?

The US and its allies frequently call for sanctions and regime change in Syria. Other countries, like Russia and China, favor diplomacy.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took a balanced stance, arguing in his opening statement that the international community must ?stop the violence and flows of arms to both sides, and set in motion a Syrian-led transition as soon as possible.?

UN and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi expressed interest in ?maintaining active contacts? with Moscow, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister said after FM Sergey Lavrov held a bilateral meeting with Brahimi on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Russia invited Brahimi to Moscow in the coming months in the hopes of crafting a plan to resolve the Syria crisis.
