Reform Spurs New Vision, Dental and Gap Insurance Products from ...

QualChoice of Little Rock will begin offering dental, vision and short-term gap health insurance this spring, which is one of several changes it?s making in response to national health care reform.

President and CEO Michael Stock said QualChoice is adding the lines because profits are limited under its large group and small and individual health insurance lines.

Under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, health insurance companies must spend at least 85 percent of the premium they collect on health care for customers in large group policies and 80 percent on small group and individual policies. (A small group policy is up to 100 employees.) If the health insurance company spends less on health care costs under those plans, the difference could be refunded to policyholders.

Stock said it?s difficult to operate under the medical loss ratios because of the limit placed on how much money can be kept to cover administrative expenses.

Before the law took effect in 2011, if the large group line suffered a loss, then the profits from the small group line could subsidize those. But not anymore.

?Every product has to be profitable and hit the loss ratios,? Stock said.

To add more revenue, QualChoice started selling Medicare supplemental insurance coverage and life insurance products in 2011.

To trim administrative expenses, in the summer of 2011 QualChoice reduced the amount of commission it paid on first-year sales for individual lines from 15 percent to 8 percent.

Company revenue for the first three quarters of 2012 was $110.5 million, a slight decline from $110.9 million for the same period in 2011, according to its filing with the Arkansas Insurance Department.

However, it reported a loss of $3.3 million, compared to a $22,589 profit for the same period in 2011. And by the end of 2011, QualChoice had a loss of $4.6 million. The company had a 2010 profit of $2 million.

Stock said ?a lot of the loss? in 2011 was tied to the implementation costs associated with health care reform. The company also had high-cost claims that year.

The 2012 loss through Sept. 30 stemmed from ?high claimants,? Stock said, with one claim over $2 million.

In the coming months, QualChoice is expected to officially announce its participation in the state health insurance exchange.

In October, the exchange is expected to start enrolling individuals and employees of small businesses for policies that go into place Jan. 1.

It?s estimated that more than 200,000 Arkansans will be buying insurance through the exchange, and some of those will certainly buy from QualChoice.

?Any business likes new customers,? Stock said.

But, he said, there are still a lot of unknowns about the exchange, including what it will cost policyholders and the insurance companies.

?The question is, what?s the price have to be to offer coverage to those people? And what?s the cost of providing care to them going to be? And can you do it profitably??

Stock said he also is unsure what the demand for health care services will be for those who currently don?t have insurance.

?Are there diabetics that haven?t been managed?? he said. ?Those could be high-cost patients.?

The health care reform law prohibits insurance companies from turning people down for coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Stock said he thinks the price of a health insurance policy in the exchange will be higher than traditional coverage today.

Still, the federal government will provide a subsidy to the policyholders to buy the insurance in the exchange. The amount of the subsidy will be based on the policyholder?s income.

One of the goals of health care reform is to lower health care costs, but Stock said he hasn?t seen prices fall since the health reform law was passed in 2010.

Apple patent application details magnetic iPad stand for extra-secure mounting

Apple patent application details magnetic iPad stand

A recently published Apple patent reveals the design for a "magnetic tablet configured to rigidly hold a portion of the tablet device in place." You can bet that "tablet device" is the iPad, and judging from the many photos associated with the patent, the stand is meant to mount the slate more securely than your average dock, not to mention the Smart Cover. One scenario, for instance, shows the iPad secured on top of a treadmill, while another depicts the device hanging from the roof of the car. By far the most intriguing example is two iPads connected to each other magnetically, creating a hinge between the two displays. Click through to the source link for a look at Cupertino's other envisioned use cases for this super-strength stand -- though don't get your hopes up on seeing this design hit stores any time soon; the original patent was filed in late 2011.

Samsung?s Galaxy Note 8.0 Will Make Its International Debut In Q2, We Go Hands-On

note8-2That Samsung was tinkering with a slightly smaller Galaxy Note tablet shouldn?t come as a surprise, but consider this the final word if you still weren't a believer. Samsung has just officially revealed that the Galaxy Note 8.0 is indeed a real product, and that it?s planning on rolling the tab out across the globe starting in Q2 2013. Though the company didn?t have anything firm to share when it came to release dates or pricing, it did have plenty to talk about in terms of hardware. The Note 8.0 tablet runs a TouchWiz?d version of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and sports a quad-core 1.6GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and (you guessed it!) an 8-inch TFT LCD display running at 1280 x 800. Perhaps it's not the most surprising spec sheet we?ll see here at MWC, but it?s certainly plenty of horsepower for a tablet this size and it shows (more on that later).

At $47,802, Oscar goodie bag skimpiest in 5 years

Adrees Latif / Reuters

Even if Jennifer Lawrence doesn't bring home an Oscar on Sunday, she'll still get to keep a $47,802 goodie bag.

By Martha C. White

A gold statue is nice, but Hollywood A-listers nominated for Oscars will get a consolation prize even if they don?t win: a $47,802 goodie bag.

That?s about the same as the MSRP for an entry-level Mercedes Benz M class (and it?s within shouting distance of America?s 2011 median household income of $50,054). Still, it?s the least-expensive this gift bag has been in five years; in 2010, Oscar swag topped $90,000.

?I am confident that having a $48,000 gift bag vs. a $58,000 gift bag will go unnoticed by Amy Adams, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence,? Lash Fary, founder of marketing firm Distinctive Assets, which has put together the "Everyone Wins at the Oscars?" gift bag for the past 11 years, said via email.

There?s still plenty of swag that evokes the typical A-list lifestyle: a $4,100 weeklong weight-loss retreat, $406 hand cream, a $795 water filtration device and and $1,800 pass to the VIP club at London's Heathrow airport.

Others are quirkier and cheaper, albeit more practical, like a $19.99 clothing de-fuzzer and a $3.99 cleaning product from Windex. There is even a six-pack of condoms valued at $20.

Fary said a smaller number of big-ticket vacation packages contributed to the lower overall value of this year?s gift bag. ?This year, we had more physical items than in past years. ?The past couple years we included more trips and gift certificates and decided to scale that back a bit this year,? he said. ?Redeeming 12 trips in one year is difficult for anyone ? let alone a busy celebrity.?

There are still some trips included in this year?s gift bag, including a choice of one of two $12,000 Australian vacations either on the Great Barrier Reef or in the Outback. There?s also a $7,400 gift certificate for interior decorating services, among others.

The appeal for companies is that they?ll score publicity if a red-carpet fixture like Robert De Niro or Sally Field uses, eats or wears their offering. This exposure is invaluable, which makes Academy Awards swag big business.

?Part of the good news about all the attention we receive during Oscar week is that we get a lot of last-minute inquiries about being added to the bags, and sometimes the company is able to mobilize to make it happen,? Fary said. Companies pay between $4,000 and $20,000 to participate, not including the cost of the items they donate.

In addition to the ?Everyone Wins? gift bag, there are gifting suites like the GBK Luxury Gift Lounge and the Oscar Celebrity Gifting Suite, not to be confused with Connected's Pre-Oscar Celebrity Gifting Suite.

Courtenay Madsen, owner of jewelry start-up Courtenay J Designs, spent about $1,250 to contribute 100 hand-stamped, sterling silver and copper necklaces for the GBK Luxury Gift Lounge, which totaled about a third of her annual marketing budget.

?The cost was definitely a factor,? she said. ?I had to watch every single penny.?

Madsen said she?s hoping for payoff in the form of a celebrity shout-out on Twitter, which could help grow her wholesale business. ?A ?lot of times the actor?s fan base will click on your information,? she said. ?You have a little bit more credibility... other people start to take notice.?

?It takes quite a lot of work and time and effort to make it happen,? said Julian Harrison, president of Premier Tours, which donated a $45,000 African safari to the ?Everybody Wins? gift bag in 2010 and had participated for the past four years. His company isn?t giving away a trip this year, but he said, ?More than likely, we will be back next year.?

Stem cell 'homing' signal may help treat heart failure patients

Feb. 21, 2013 ? In the first human study of its kind, researchers activated heart failure patients' stem cells with gene therapy to improve their symptoms, heart function and quality of life, according to a study in the American Heart Association journal Circulation Research.

Researchers delivered a gene that encodes a factor called SDF-1 to activate stem cells like a "homing" signal.

The study is unique because researchers introduced the "homing" factor to draw stem cells to the site of injury and enhance the body's stem cell-based repair process. Generally, researchers extract and expand the number of cells, then deliver them back to the subject.

"We believe stem cells are always trying to repair tissue, but they don't do it well -- not because we lack stem cells but, rather, the signals that regulate our stem cells are impaired," said Marc S. Penn, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Research at Summa Cardiovascular Institute in Akron, Ohio, and lead author and professor of medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio.

SDF-1 is a naturally occurring protein, secreted by cells, that guides the movement of other cells. Previous research by Penn and colleagues has shown SDF-1 activates and recruits the body's stem cells, allowing them to heal damaged tissue. However, the effect may be short-lived. For example, SDF-1 that's naturally expressed after a heart attack lasts only a week.

In the study, researchers attempted to re-establish and extend the time that SDF-1 could stimulate patients' stem cells. Study participants' average age was 66 years.

Researchers injected one of three doses of the SDF-1 gene (5mg, 15mg or 30mg) into the hearts of 17 patients with symptomatic heart failure and monitored them for up to a year. Four months after treatment, they found:

  • Patients improved their average distance by 40 meters during a six-minute walking test.
  • Patients reported improved quality of life.
  • The heart's pumping ability improved, particularly for those receiving the two highest doses of SDF-1 compared to the lowest dose.
  • No apparent side effects occurred with treatment.

"We found 50 percent of patients receiving the two highest doses still had positive effects one year after treatment with their heart failure classification improving by at least one level," Penn said. "They still had evidence of damage, but they functioned better and were feeling better."

The findings indicate people's stem cells have the potential to induce healing without having to be taken out of the body, Penn said.

"Our study also shows gene therapy has the potential to help people heal their own hearts."

At the start of the study, participants didn't have significant reversible heart damage, but lacked blood flow in the areas bordering their damaged heart tissue.

The study's results -- consistent with other animal and laboratory studies of SDF-1 -- suggest that SDF-1 gene injections can increase blood flow around an area of damaged tissue, which has been deemed irreversible by other testing.

Researchers are now comparing results from heart failure patients receiving SDF-1 with patients who aren't. If the trial goes well, the therapy could be widely available to heart failure patients within four to five years, Penn said.

Marvell Technology's upbeat forecast boosts shares

(Reuters) - Chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd forecast results this quarter largely above analysts' expectations as it gained market share in hard-disk drive and flash storage businesses, sending its shares up 5 percent in trading after the bell.

Marvell, whose chips are used for reading and writing data on hard-disk drives, said it expected adjusted profit of 14 cents, plus or minus 2 cents, per share on revenue of $700 million to $740 million in the first quarter.

Analysts on average were expecting a profit of 13 cents per share on revenue of $710.8 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Marvell's forecast is in contrast with its rival LSI Corp, which last month forecast current-quarter revenue from continuing operations below analysts' estimates.

Santa Clara, California-based Marvell's shares were trading at $9.90 after closing at $9.47 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

The company's major customers Western Digital Corp and Seagate Technology Plc last month posted results above analysts estimates.

Marvell's interim Chief Financial Officer Brad Feller said on a conference call with analysts that the company would benefit from the new Blackberry 10 smartphone, which uses Marvell chips.

The company, which makes communications and processor products used in mobile phones, said its results were helped by a "North American mobile customer" during the fourth quarter.

The company's net income fell to $50 million, or 9 cents per share, in the fourth quarter ended February 2 from $81 million, or 13 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company earned 19 cents per share.

Revenue rose 4 percent to $775 million.

Analysts were expecting a profit of 13 cents per share on revenue of $720.9 million.

Japan stocks rally to near four-year highs, yen resumes fall after G20

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese shares surged 2.1 percent on Monday and were on the brink of revisiting four-year highs tapped recently, as the yen slumped after Tokyo dodged direct criticism from G20 peers on its aggressive reflation plans that have weakened the currency.

The G20 opted not to single out Tokyo, but committed members to refrain from competitive devaluations and said monetary policy would be directed only at price stability and growth. Japan said this decision is a green light to pursue its expansionary policies.

The market's focus is now on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's nominee for the next Bank of Japan governor. Abe is expected to announce his choice in coming days.

Sources told Reuters on Friday that former top financial bureaucrat Toshiro Muto is leading the field of candidates to govern the bank. He may intensify stimulus efforts to energise the economy but might not pursue unconventional easing measures.

"The G20 basically gave tacit approval for currency weakening as a result of monetary easing, and not intervention. So that puts focus on what the BOJ will do next. As long as the BOJ shows its seriousness about stamping out deflation, the yen's decline will likely be tolerated," said Citibank Japan chief FX strategist Osamu Takashima.

The dollar gained 0.5 percent to 93.97 yen inching closer to its highest since May 2010 of 94.465 hit on February 11. The euro added 0.3 percent to 125.34 yen, still below its peak since April 2010 of 127.71 yen touched on February 6.

The Nikkei average <.n225> closed up 2.1 percent as exporters and banks led the pack on the softening yen, after surging as much 2.4 percent earlier to come close to its highest level since September 2008 of 11,498.42 tapped on February 6. <.t/>

"The G20 effect is already seen in Abe's general comments on forex today which steered away from giving specifics on a preferred level or direction for the yen," said Yunosuke Ikeda, a senior FX strategist at Nomura Securities.

Abe said on Monday that the BOJ's monetary easing is aimed at beating deflation, not at manipulating the forex market and weakening the yen, and said correcting excessive yen rises would be an appropriate policy direction. Previously, Japanese officials have noted that the current yen selling was a correction to the past excessive yen strength.

The yen's weakness weighed on emerging Asian currencies while South Korean shares <.ks11> eased 0.3 percent on concerns about the eroding competitive edge for the country's exporters.

Japan will keep pursuing its current policy, said Yuna Park, a currency and bond analyst at Dongbu Securities in Seoul. "The rest of Asia will not just wait and see. That will put more pressure on Asian currencies," he said.

A weaker yen would make other currencies relatively stronger against the dollar and fuel speculation that other Asian countries could step in to curb the strength of their currencies, Nomura's Ikeda said.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> paused, after moving in a narrow range. The pan-Asian index briefly hit a 18-1/2-month high on Friday and had its best performance since the week of January 6 with a 1.2 percent weekly gain.

Australian shares led the pan-Asian index with a 0.6 percent rise as a string of earnings reports supported a view that the local economy was in better-than-expected shape.

Markets in China and Taiwan resumed trading after a week-long holiday.

Indonesian stocks <.jkse> inched up 0.1 percent after setting a record high for a fifth straight session on Friday, while shares in Thailand <.seti> were up 0.2 percent as the country's economy grew a robust 3.6 percent in the fourth quarter from the previous three months.

European markets may track lower, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> would open down 0.1 percent. U.S. stock futures were barely changed. U.S. markets will be closed on Monday for the President's Day holiday. <.l><.eu><.n/>

STOCKS CONSOLIDATE

Data from EPFR Global on Friday underscored that a consolidation was underway in global equities after their recent rally. It showed investors worldwide pulled $3.62 billion from U.S. stock funds in the latest week, the most in ten weeks after taking a neutral stance the prior week. But demand for emerging market equities remained strong, with investors putting $1.81 billion in new cash into stock funds, the fund-tracking firm said.

Commodities markets awaited clues on demand from China, the top consumer.

"China's overall economy is still strong, so the appetite for base metals after Chinese New Year will gradually pick up," said Helen Lau, senior commodity analyst at UOB-Kay Hian in Hong Kong.

London copper fell 0.4 percent to $8,170 a tonne as traders played catch up after a week-long holiday in China, with worries about the euro zone economy weighing on sentiment.

U.S. crude fell 0.2 percent to $95.68 a barrel but Brent inched up 0.1 percent to $117.82.

Gold rebounded from a six-month low on bargain hunting and as jewellers in China returned to the physical market after the Lunar New Year holiday.

Over the final fifteen years, solar energy has turn out to be a hugely flexible energy supply. One of the ideal approaches to use it and cut charges is go with solar lighting for your walkways.

A common misconception amongst several folks is that solar power demands massive, bulky panels to work. While this is accurate if you want to create big amounts of electrical energy for a structure, it leaves out a large segment of cheaper solar users.

The solar industry has created key advancements in generating one piece solar platforms that are low cost and can be used for practical purposes. Employing solar lights for pathways about your property is 1 region.

Solar lighting is now the choice for gardens, landscaping and lighting paths. Lighting products typically come in sets of two to six self-contained lights. Each and every light typically is comprised of a metal or plastic stem with a lighting mechanism on the prime. The lighting mechanism makes use of LED technology and is powered by a small solar panel constructed into the leading of the piece. The lights can be bought with or without having backup batteries depending on your requirements.

After youve selected your solar lighting pieces, you simply map out exactly where you want to add lighting in your landscaping. Next, you put the solar lights in place by sticking them in the ground to a point where they are snug and will not blow over in the wind. Congratulations! You now have lighting for your pathways that isnt adding to your utility bill.

Your lights will charge throughout the day and light up in the evening. Based on the particular brand, the lights might stay on all through the evening. Alternatively, particular brands will run for 8 hours or so, which implies they go dark about midnight or a single in the morning.

Maintaining your solar lights is quite straightforward. You really dont have to do anything. If the lights start off to dim or go out earlier than usual, they are not broken. Generally, the dilemma is you have dirty solar panels. Clean them off with water or adhere to the manufacturer direction. As soon as clean, the lights ought to operate perfectly. understandable

Employing the sun to energy your outdoor lighting requirements is a great way to highlight your property and save income on energy costs. Hold them clean and the lights will final for years.

Green Blog: Gas Pipeline Draws Last-Minute Protests

In a last-ditch effort to block construction of a controversial natural gas pipeline in northeastern Pennsylvania, campaigners urged an interstate regulator on Friday to review the project?s environmental impact.

The 44-mile section of pipeline, the Northeast Upgrade, would become part of a longer pipeline moving natural gas extracted from the Marcellus Shale in northern Pennsylvania to a terminal in Mahwah, N.J. In a letter, the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, an environmental group, urged the Delaware River Basin Commission to study the potential impacts, arguing that the project will result in the loss of forest and the degradation of wetlands if construction is allowed to begin.

Opponents argue that in approving the project, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission did not conduct a thorough environmental review. Last week they suffered a setback when the federal Court of Appeals in Washington denied an emergency motion by Delaware Riverkeeper and others for an injunction to rescind FERC?s approval of the plan.

While a court challenge to the legality of FERC?s approval for the Northeast Upgrade is still pending, the outcome may only apply to future pipelines once construction of the new segment gets going, said Maya K. van Rossum, who heads the environmental group.

Ms. Van Rossum said the Delaware River Basin Commission, controlled by the governors of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware and the federal Army Corps of Engineers, was therefore the group?s last hope. The commission is charged with maintaining water quality and managing water resources in the 330-mile long basin.

?Exercise of this jurisdiction? could ?avoid and minimize the incredible level of harm the traditional method of pipeline construction used in our watershed to date has inflicted,? Ms. Van Rossum wrote in the letter. The commission, which had refused to exercise its authority, recently reversed itself, saying that it would review the TGP300 pipeline, of which the Northeast Upgrade is a part, but not the Upgrade itself.

Unless the commission steps in, tree-cutting for the section of the upgrade that falls into the Delaware watershed on the Pennsylvania and New Jersey sides of the river could begin as soon as next week, Ms. Van Rossum said.

On Thursday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved tree-cutting for a section of the Upgrade that falls within the Delaware River basin.

A spokesman for the Delaware River Basin Commission did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Saturday, 1:30 p.m. | Updated
Clarke Rupert, a spokesman for the commission, said later by e-mail that it would not be reconsidering its approval of the pipeline company?s application for water withdrawals associated with the pipeline upgrade.

?A public hearing was held on the same date prior to the vote to approve, which was unanimous,? Mr. Rupert wrote. ?The time for appeal of the commission?s docket approval has elapsed.?

?This matter concluded when the docket was approved and no timely appeal of the commission?s action was filed,? he added.

Critics of the project also accuse the operator of the company Tennessee Gas Pipeline of avoiding a thorough review of the project under the National Environmental Policy Act by seeking permits for separate sections of the pipeline rather than for the line as a whole. In court documents, they argue that the company ?evaded? a comprehensive environmental review and that FERC ?unlawfully? segmented the analysis required under the National Environmental Polcy Act.

FERC maintains that it was legally entitled to conduct a segmented analysis of the project.

Richard Wheatley, a spokesman for Kinder Morgan, the parent company of Tennessee Gas Pipeline, said the upgrade project was proceeding despite legal challenges because FERC has rejected them, mostly recently on Jan. 11, as have federal courts in Pennsylvania and Washington.

?The January 11 order is reflective of a diligent review of claims dealing with environmental issues, right-of-way routing, late filings by numerous individuals and entities? and other issues, Mr. Wheatley wrote in an e-mail.

In Milford in northeastern Pennsylvania, opposition is focused on plans to clear a seven-mile swath of forest where the pipeline would be built rather than using an existing right of way that would not require cutting trees.

Senator Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania, has meanwhile urged the Army Corps of Engineers, which must approve any projects that cross wetlands or waterways, to consider alternative routes.

2013 NFL Scouting Combine Preview: Tight Ends

Despite having four players on the roster at the position and another as a restricted free agent, the Packers could potentially be in the market for a rookie tight end.

At this point, it's still entirely possible that Jermichael Finley will be a Packer in 2013, and scouting the top tight ends may be a lesson in futility. However, it appears equally probable that Finley will be cut to save some substantial cash and cap room and we may be seeing Ted Thompson draft a tight end in the first few rounds. At this point, nothing will surprise me. With that said, let's break down the tight ends coming to this year's scouting combine.

Top Prospects

Tyler Eifert (Notre Dame) and Zach Ertz (Stanford) are the headliners in this year's rookie class. Both have been projected to the Packers by some prognosticators at 26th overall, but I could only see the team drafting one of these two if Jermichael Finley is released in the next few weeks. Both are big, talented pass-catchers, but have some work to do as blockers. Eifert is probably the better of the two when blocking is concerned.

Mid-Round Sleepers

Gavin Escobar (San Diego State) could be a target in the middle rounds as a big, athletic target. He's not as polished as the top two, but like Finley when he was drafted a few years ago, he has a lot of untapped potential. If the Packers decide they want a tight end who can block first, Dion Sims of Michigan State may be a target. Niners Nation broke down Sims yesterday - he's massive at 280+ pounds, but he'll almost certainly be closer to 270 at the Combine and he's very athletic for a man that size.

Finally, another equally unusual physical specimen is Levine Toilolo, Ertz's teammate at Stanford. He's probably one of the least-polished tight ends in the draft, but his 6'7" frame and athleticism will make someone jump at the chance to mold him into a red zone monster.

Best Names

There's no question on this one. Philip Lutzenkirchen from Auburn is the automatic winner. Toilolo may be a great option, but you can't beat an incredible last name like Lutzenkirchen.

Notable Absence

You'll see if you scroll through the whole list that one relatively big name was left off the combine invite list. That person is Michael Williams of Alabama, who made a nice catch for a touchdown in the Senior Bowl. It's a shame that Williams won't be able to work out at the combine, as he's a player who could definitely benefit from some of the pass-catching drills.

Oklahoma football: Coaching changes indicate that Bob Stoops isn't happy with program, recruiting efforts

Jenni Carlson, a sports columnist at The Oklahoman since 1999, came by her love of sports honestly. She grew up in a sports-loving family in Kansas. Her dad coached baseball and did color commentary on the radio for the high school football games. Her mom kept the scorebook during baseball games and yelled her head off no matter the sport. They passed along that passion to Carlson and her two younger brothers.

Carlson played golf in high school and planned to play in college, but when she started at the University of Kansas, she decided to focus her attention on journalism. It?s a decision that she?s never regretted.

Her first big story was a profile on Kansas basketball coach Roy Williams for the yearbook, and Carlson has enjoyed interviewing sports figures and sharing their stories every since.
Carlson is a 1997 graduate of Kansas. She and her husband, Ryan, were married in 2009 and live in Oklahoma City. They welcomed their first child, Millie, in June 2012. Carlson was the president of the Association for Women in Sports Media from 2008-10 and chair of the board from 2010-12.

Redrik the Cowardly Bastard.

Redrik.

Redrik the bastard.

Redrik the coward. Redrik the fat. Redrik the meek.

Redrik gritted his teeth as he gripped the wooden spear haft. He had never been so terrified in his entire life. The giant was enormous, easily taller than any building in the village. It bellowed a hellish roar and shattered through the wooden palisade with contemptible ease. His body wanted to run, he wanted to scream, throw down his sharpened stick and flee for his life.

But he couldn't.

Rus and Varag stood on either side of him, their knuckles white as they squeezed their own spears. Rus, who stood on his right, gave him a hard look; his piercing blue eyes seeming to glow above his thick black beard.

"I see you take one step back, Redrik Yulestone, and I'll cut your feet off, that you might never run again." Rus' voice was like two stone being ground against each other. For just a moment, Redrik was more afraid of him than the giant.

Redrik clenched his jaw tightly, and dug his heels into the dirt. The dirt that he had been born from, the dirt that he would return too when he died. He wouldn't run, not again, not ever again. The tower behemoth strode closer, every lumbering step ringing in Redrik's ears like funeral bells. In every way, the giant was the very antithesis of Redrik himself. Impossibly tall and lanky, but also incredibly strong and fearless. In contrast, Redrik was short and squat, with a fat stomach, flabby arms, and a coward.

But none of that mattered now. This was his home. This villain from the Outside had come here, to his village, to kill, steal, and destroy. How could he run, when the only place he had ever run too was here?

"No." Redrik replied, surprised at the steel in his own voice. "Don't worry about me Rus."

He heard a throaty chuckle to his left. Varag nudged him with his shoulder.

"Dat's da spirit laddy! Dontcha worry aboot dis biggun', he'll fall like all da rest!" He exclaimed, an insane beard splitting his grey beard in half.

From somewhere behind them, a voice screamed.

"LOOSE VOLLEY!"

(More to come.)

Does Google Play Fast and Loose With App Users' Personal Info?

Reports circulated on Wednesday surrounding a possible Google privacy issue when an app developer in Australia discovered he had access to the personal information of users who downloaded his Android app in Google Play.

Developer Dan Nolan wrote a blog post describing how he found a treasure trove of personal information such as email and mailing addresses from users who downloaded his app from Google Play.

Nolan's concerns highlight something that has been part of Google's Terms of Service (ToS) since the beginning. Both app developers and consumers agree to the sharing of personal information by accepting the ToS.

"If you bought the app on Google Play ? even if you cancelled the order ? I have your email address, your suburb and in many instances, your full name," Nolan wrote. "This is a massive oversight by Google. Under no circumstances should I be able to get the information of the people who are buying my apps unless they opt into it and it?s made crystal clear to them that I?m getting this information."

Nolan said the information would allow developers to "track down and harass users who left negative reviews or refunded the app purchase."

When someone purchases an app via Google Play, it is made through Google Wallet and the payment goes directly to the developer. When users pay the developer, certain information can be sent, ostensibly for billing and taxing purposes. The developer agrees to not use this information for spam or beyond certain terms when they sign up and agree to Terms of Service.

Similarly, when consumers download certain apps, they also agree to terms and are told they may be required to share this type of information.

For iOS, Apple is the merchant of record ? not the developers, as with Google Play ? when users purchase apps via the Apple App Store. As such, the same kind of automatic sharing of personal information doesn't happen.

"This is an interesting philosophical difference and users who buy something with Google Play are probably assuming they are doing business with Google ? not the developer," Chester Wisniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos, told Mashable.

In addition, Google Play has had a track record for having more malicious apps than the Apple App Store. Some of which have phished user information to steal money and identities.

"While I wouldn't panic, it's probably something Google should revisit," Wisniewski said. "A cybercriminal could create an app just to get data, and that is what Google should want to avoid."

Are you concerned about the sharing of your personal information on Google Play? Let us know in the comments.

Spotting dysfunction in the gym - The Orange County Register

Obese diners are free to gorge at McDonald's. Gambling addicts can spend every last dollar in a casino. Cancer patients are allowed to buy cigarettes.

So should gyms be different, as far as members who exercise too much and often have eating disorders?

Robyn Baker is a personal trainer at the Healthfit 4 Life studio at Personal Care Physicians in Newport Beach.

PAUL BERSEBACH, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Excessive exercising

According to the American Journal of Sports Medicine, overexercising can cause pulled muscles, stress fractures, knee trauma, shin splints, strained hamstrings and ripped tendons. Women may stop menstruating and develop osteoporosis. The heart also can become overstressed.

Although excessive exercising doesn't have to go with an eating disorder, the two often go hand in hand. With anorexia, excessive workouts are a way to control weight, along with restricted eating. A person with bulimia may use exercise to compensate for binge eating.

Warning signs:

?Refusal to skip a workout even when tired, sick or injured.

?Skipping seeing friends, giving up activities to make more time for exercise.

?Significant weight loss.

?Increasing exercise after eating more.

That was the scenario raised in a letter to the British Medical Journal by an adolescent health researcher troubled by the workout routine of an extremely thin, twentysomething woman he saw during every visit to the gym.

"While I'm trying to wake up on the treadmill, Amy is coming out of the early morning aerobics class, having finished an hourlong workout," wrote Rony Duncan of Australia. "While the others head to the showers, Amy heads to the bicycles. Often she is still there by the time I leave. ... Having shared several concerned glances with fellow gym members, I suspect I'm not the only one who is worried."

While Duncan notes that businesses such as fast food restaurants and casinos have no obligation to the well-being of their customers, he wonders if gyms, which exist to promote healthy living, should be held to a higher standard.

Some fitness centers say they are aware of the problem. An article posted on the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association's website includes tips on what to do if a member is suspected of having an eating disorder. In educational material posted there, one expert estimated 90 percent to 95 percent of people with eating disorders use a fitness center.

San Diego State University has a public service campaign targeting excessive exercise, sometimes called exercise bulimia or anorexia athletica, which asks: "Are you getting too much of a good thing?"

Irvine resident Robyn Baker, a personal trainer and Pilates instructor, understands the compulsion.

She was anorexic at 18, but after reaching a healthier weight, she moved to overexercising. She didn't miss a three-hour workout in five years.

Looking back, Baker said some gym members must have been disturbed by her. But she also received compliments.

"People would come up to me and say, 'You look great; you're in here all the time. That's awesome.' They would praise me and tell me I should be a model and I'm so skinny and I'm so lucky. In my head, my eating disorder loved to hear that."

Baker has worked in a number of large gyms and said none had policies for handling a member who appeared to work out too much.

"It's a very touchy subject," Baker said. "It's not like a bar; they can't cut you off. When you go to a bar and you see someone drunk, a bartender isn't going to give you any more beer. If you walk into a gym at 2 percent body fat and bones are sticking out, they don't say you can't come in."

Baker said she would love to see gyms offer education on signs of eating disorders, as well as how to approach a member or personal training client.

"It is a growing problem, and people don't know how to address it, so they don't. They don't want to talk about it because it's uncomfortable. It's taboo."

Irvina Kanarek, founder of Rewrite Beautiful, a Newport Beach nonprofit group that uses art against eating disorders, said those recovering from eating disorders can be triggered by seeing gaunt women exercise excessively in the gym.

She wishes health clubs had counselors or psychologists available. But she also said that such intervention doesn't always work.

"I've also had an experience when I was at the gym. I had a woman trainer who was taking my body mass index," Kanarek said. "She mentioned to me, 'Your BMI is really low.' I was at the point where I wasn't really admitting I had an eating disorder."

The trainer proceeded to talk about the risk of eating disorders and too much exercise.

"I was completely offended and upset with her, and I never went back to that gym."

But Kanarek, who overcame anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating, said if she saw a gym goer who appeared to be struggling, she would try to reach out.

"Personally, if I was to see someone looking that way, I would definitely become a friend of theirs," she said. "I would chat with them. I would get to know them. I would say I've struggled with this."

Incubated By Siri Birthplace SRI, Tempo Launches A Calendar App With The Info You Need For Any Meeting

tempo screenshotEven if you're not as laughably disorganized as I am, I'm guessing you've had a few of those "oh, crap" moments before a meeting or a phone call. You've sat there desperately trying to remember why you're meeting with someone, or the exact address that you're supposed to drive to, or some other important piece of information. A new startup called Tempo aims to eliminate those situations with a smart calendar app launching today. The company spun out from SRI International, the research institute that also incubated the voice-powered assistant Siri (which was acquired by Apple and is now a key part of the iPhone). Like ?other recent SRI projects, Tempo is type of personal assistant, but of a very different sort than Siri.

IEA Tweaks China Calculation Method

The International Energy Agency said Wednesday that it is changing the way it calculates China's oil demand but acknowledged even this new method won't be accurate?due to shortcomings in official Chinese data.

"Few oil market issues are more critical yet more elusive than getting Chinese demand right," the industrial countries' energy watchdog said in its latest monthly report, adding that assessing current and past Chinese oil use is more art than science.

China has accounted for roughly 10% of the world's oil consumption and 40% of global growth in oil use in recent years, it said. In 2013, China's estimated oil product demand will be 9.98 million barrels a day, up from 9.96 million barrels a day in 2012.

In the past, the IEA, like many others, calculated Chinese "apparent demand"?a proxy for consumption?as the sum of Chinese refinery output and net product imports, it said.

However, it is unclear whether data from China's National Bureau of Statistics on Chinese refinery output include only state-owned refineries or if this captured some of the independent refineries commonly referred to as "teapots," which are estimated to account for as much as a third of Chinese nominal refinery capacity.

Additionally, the absence of reliable Chinese refined oil stock data is an obvious shortcoming, the IEA said. While China has produced some data on oil stocks since 2006, in recent years the numbers have been limited to percentage changes, and haven't included volumes, it said.

It is also unclear whether the inventory data that is published includes oil products held by the smaller two of China's four main refining companies or stocks held by independent refiners, it said.

To better reflect Chinese demand, the IEA has adjusted its methodology to capture reported stock changes, it said.

Even so, percentage stock changes reported by the official Xinhua news agency only include inventories of gasoline, gasoil and jet-kerosene. They don't account for any changes in liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha or fuel oil stocks.

Despite the shortcomings in official data from China, other mainstream energy organizations include forecasts from the world's second-largest oil consumer in their reports.

Wednesday, for example, the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicted China's oil demand would grow 4.4% this year. The IEA has forecast the growth rate at 4.0%.
