Landslides linked to plate tectonics create the steepest mountain terrain

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Some of the steepest mountain slopes in the world got that way because of the interplay between terrain uplift associated with plate tectonics and powerful streams cutting into hillsides, leading to erosion in the form of large landslides, new research shows.

The work, presented online May 27 in Nature Geoscience, shows that once the angle of a slope exceeds 30 degrees ? whether from uplift, a rushing stream carving away the bottom of the slope or a combination of the two ? landslide erosion increases significantly until the hillside stabilizes.

"I think the formation of these landscapes could apply to any steep mountain terrain in the world," said lead author Isaac Larsen, a University of Washington doctoral student in Earth and space sciences.

The study, co-authored by David Montgomery, a UW professor of Earth and space sciences and Larsen's doctoral adviser, focuses on landslide erosion along rivers in the eastern Himalaya region of southern Asia.

The scientists studied images of more than 15,000 landslides before 1974 and more than 550 more between 1974 and 2007. The data came from satellite imagery, including high-resolution spy satellite photography that was declassified in the 1990s.

They found that small increases in slope angle above about 30 degrees translated into large increases in landslide erosion as the stress of gravity exceeded the strength of the bedrock.

"Interestingly, 35 degrees is about the same angle that will form if sand or other coarse granular material is poured into a pile," Larsen said. "Sand is non-cohesive, whereas intact bedrock can have high cohesion and should support steeper slopes.

"The implication is that bedrock in tectonically active mountains is so extensively fractured that in some ways it behaves like a sand pile. Removal of sand at the base of the pile will cause miniature landslides, just as erosion of material at the base of hill slopes in real mountain ranges will lead to landslides."

The researchers looked closely at an area of the 150-mile Tsangpo Gorge in southeast Tibet, possibly the deepest gorge in the world, downstream from the Yarlung Tsangpo River where the Po Tsangpo River plunges more than 6,500 feet, about 1.25 miles. It then becomes the Brahmaputra River before flowing through the Ganges River delta and into the Bay of Bengal.

The scientists found that within the steep gorge, the rapidly flowing water can scour soil from the bases, or toes, of slopes, leaving exposed bedrock and an increased slope angle that triggers landslides to stabilize the slopes.

From 1974 through 2007, erosion rates reached more than a half-inch per year along some 6-mile stretches of the river within the gorge, and throughout that active landslide region erosion ranged from 0.15 to 0.8 inch per year. Areas with less tectonic and landslide activity experienced erosion rates of less than 0.15 inch a year.

Images showed that a huge landslide in early 2000 created a gigantic dam on a stretch of the Po Tsangpo. The dam failed catastrophically in June of that year, and the ensuing flood caused a number of fatalities and much property damage downstream.

That event illustrates the processes at work in steep mountain terrain, but the processes happen on a faster timescale in the Tsangpo Gorge than in other steep mountain regions of the world and so are more easily verified.

"We've been able to document the role that landslides play in the Tsangpo Gorge," Larsen said. "It explains how steep mountain topography evolves over time."

Robot on your shoulder keeps a friend (or parent) close

55 min.

Ever feel like you have a little person on your shoulder keeping track of your every move, providing encouragement to keep up the good work or stop you from doing something bad?

That little person may soon be more than just your conscience; it could be a robot that provides real-time interaction between you and a remote friend (or parent) as you do what you do.

Imagine going on a trip, for example, and bringing along your best friend who?s stuck at home, or sticking a robot on your child?s shoulder to remotely chaperone a Friday night out.

The robot, known as the miniature humanoid, or MH-2, is under development at Yamagata University in Japan. It has head and body moves like a person. It even breathes like one.

The idea is that a person stands in front a TV screen or an immersive display with a sensor such as a Kinect. This person sees whatever the person with the robot sees.

?Meanwhile, the robot on your shoulder acts like an avatar, duplicating the speech and gestures of your friend right there for you to interact with directly,? IEEE reports in its Automation blog.?

For now, the robot is controlled by servos in a 22 pound backpack, which would make bringing along a friend for every moment of a trip quite cumbersome, as well as awkwardly geeky.

But when the telepresence technology catches up with the imagination as illustrated in the video clip below, this could serve to keep friends and family close when they physically far apart.

Was flame virus that invaded Iran's computer networks made in USA?

By Robert WindremNBC News

As the United Nations and Iran warn that the newly discovered flame computer virus may be the most potent weapon of its kind, U.S. computer security experts tell NBC News that the virus bears the hallmarks of a U.S. cyber espionage operation, specifically that of the super-secret National Security Agency.

The flame virus, which is intended to gather intelligence -- not destroy equipment or data, as was the case with the notorious Stuxnet virus -- is too sophisticated to be the work of another country, said one U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. ?It was U.S.,? said the official, who acknowledged having no first-hand knowledge of how the virus operates or was introduced into the Iranian computers.

The U.S. was also believed to have a hand in the creation and insertion of the Stuxnet virus, which targeted Iran?s uranium-enriching centrifuges.

The newly discovered flame virus essentially ?colonizes? the targeted computers, giving hackers control over critical data stored on them, according to cybersecurity experts who spoke with NBC News.

?

U.S. intelligence officials declined to discuss the virus. ?We have no comment,? said one. ?Israeli officials, suspected in previous attacks, denied involvement.

The virus was first discovered and announced over the weekend by a Russian cybersecurity organization after reports of massive data losses in Iranian government computers.? Kaspersky Lab told Reuters it found the flame infection after the International Telecommunications Union asked it to investigate. ?By some accounts, the virus has been operating in the wild for as long as five years.

"This is the most serious (cyber) warning we have ever put out," Marco Obiso, cybersecurity coordinator for the U.N.'s Geneva-based ITU, told Reuters on Tuesday, referring to a bulletin about the virus expected to be issued in the next few days.

The confidential warning will tell member nations that the flame virus is a dangerous espionage tool that could potentially be used to attack critical infrastructure, Obiso said.

Other experts said the virus appears to be a different type of invader than Stuxnet.

"From reading press reports, this appears to be penetrating networks to surveil, as opposed to destroy, as was the case with Stuxnet,? said Michael Leiter, former director of the National Counter Terrorism Center and now an NBC News analyst. ?Such computer network operations are core components of what our and other intelligence services do day in and day out.

?Our intelligence services know that any weakness in an information system can mean the entire system is vulnerable. ?This makes defense very, very hard.? Network defenses must work reliably and in real time across the entire network to defend against persistent intruders."

Iran?s cybersecurity officials seem to agree.? The New York Times reported Iran?s Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center issued a warning Tuesday, saying, ?This malware is a platform which is capable of receiving and installing various modules for different goals.?

If this is indeed a U.S. cyberwarfare operation, said computer security expert Roger Cressey, the target is likely to be Iran?s nuclear program and its decision-making apparatus.?

"Whoever has developed this is engaged in very sophisticated intelligence gathering on computer networks throughout the region.? Clearly, Iran is a top priority for this program," said Cressey, former chief of staff of ?the President?s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board under George W. Bush and now an NBC News analyst.

Two years ago, the U.S. and Israel were suspected of inserting the Stuxnet virus into the Iranian centrifuge center at Natanz.? ?When the control software was corrupted, the motors that control the uranium centrifuge operations didn?t operate correctly, wobbling instead of spinning the way they?re supposed to, U.S. officials say.

Iran?s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that the work of Kaspersky Labs helped Iran uncover the infection and remove it from the centrifuge control program.? Cybersecurity officials have told NBC News that the infection, while heavily publicized, was not as effective in disrupting Iran?s nuclear program as has been portrayed in some media accounts.

But Stuxnet is an example, said one U.S. official, of how those aiming to slow the Iranian nuclear program, which the U.S. says is aimed at producing nuclear weaponry, can have an effect similar to that of economic sanctions. The Iran program keeps making progress, he said, but never quite gets there.

Other U.S. officials said that the viruses not only affect the targeted program; they also make Iranian officials ?paranoid.? Additionally, countering the attacks diverts valuable assets and resources from the core mission, they said.?

While the flame virus appears to be aimed more at gathering intelligence on the Iranian program, it, too, aims to make the Iranians paranoid, the officials said. It does so?by making them wonder about security and by raising questions about whether ?the enemy knows the intricacies of Iranian decision making, not just on the nuclear program but on a host of other issues important to the U.S. and the West, they said.

?You Have to Pay for That?: California City Bills Obama $35K After Campaign Fundraiser

Newport Beach, California Bills Obama $35,000 For Extra Security During Campaign Stop

With California?s current deficit woes, it has seemingly become difficult to justify the tens of thousands of dollars it can cost the taxpayer in extra security measures for Obama?s campaign stops.

That is why, according to the Los Angeles Times, Newport Beach has billed the president $35,043.04.

The L.A. Times continues:

City Manager Dave Kiff said the invoice was his idea.

?I think it is appropriate to treat it like a private event ? if another private event that large and which required that much police presence occurred, we would bill the event sponsor,? he said in an email. ?If the president was here on presidential business, we likely would not have billed for that.?

[...]

The expenses include costs for a police lieutenant, sergeant, two officers, a reserve officer, a senior dispatch officer, a community service officer plus overtime.

CBS analyzed the bill, and interviewed locals on the matter:

The invoice, which is dated May 10th and is due June 9th, had not been acknowledged or paid as of Thursday, according to the L.A. Times.

?Our country is broke,? a man living in the neighborhood where Obama held his fundraiser said.? ?You have to pay for that.?

What remains to be seen is whether Obama will actually pay off this debt?and with whose money.

a. Forming a Corporation or LLC in California.

Many small businesses want to include or form an LLC in their house state. Usually, it's least confusing and most economical to incorporate within the state the place you might be planning to operate your company. If you incorporate outside your property state, you continue to could also be required to qualify to do business in your house state. The price of a neighborhood incorporation will often be a lot much less than incorporating in one other state after which qualifying to do business in your house state as a "overseas" (out of state) corporation. Additionally, you will avoid paying franchise taxes and submitting annual stories in 2 different states.

b. Advantages of a Delaware Company or LLC.

Over 505 of the NY Stock Exchange corporations are Delaware corporations. Delaware has an extended heritage as a business-friendly state and may be a good choice if you intend to take your business public and supply publicly traded stock. Delaware has many different advantages, together with low incorporation charges, low annual franchise taxes, and no state company income tax for corporations that function exterior of Delaware. Additionally, Delaware maintains a separate court docket system for enterprise, known as the "Courtroom of Chancery." This Court docket is thought for its effectively-established file of choices and quickness at which it handles disputes. So as a substitute of spending your invaluable time in court docket, you can spend it running your business. Be aware, nevertheless, that when you incorporate in Delaware while your enterprise is situated outside of Delaware, you may have to qualify to do business in your house jurisdiction. This will require an extra stage and fee to your property state.

c. Benefits of a Nevada Company or LLC.

Nevada has become increasingly pleasant to firms with its privacy and liability protection status in addition to certain tax advantages. Nevada has absolutely no state tax on company earnings, no state annual franchise tax, or no state private tax. Stockholders of a Nevada corporation usually are not public record, allowing total privacy. Nonetheless, if you incorporate in Nevada whereas your enterprise is located in another state, you may want to qualify to do enterprise in your home state. This may require another stage and an additional charge to your own home state.

d. Can a Delaware or Nevada Company or LLC Do Enterprise in Other States?

Yes. As noted above, almost one half of the firms listed on the New York Stock Trade are Delaware companies and numerous large companies are relocating to Nevada. These massive companies work throughout the U.S. and internationally. They should, after all, comply with the laws of any jurisdiction they enter into. Lots of states require that any foreign (out of state) corporation be eligible to work of their state prior to truly working there.

e. Doing Enterprise in Extra Than One State.

A lot of companies do business all over the U.S. and internationally. A corporation having enterprise areas in many states will usually incorporate or type an LLC in a single state, then "qualify to do enterprise" within the different states. This means they formally register in these different states, spending extra franchise taxes and filing annual stories, as necessary.

Find What You Love: Stanford University Commencement address by Steve Jobs | Ze

?Your time is limited, so don?t waste it living someone else?s life?

Commencement address by Steve Jobs
CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios

Given to graduates of Stanford University, June 12, 2005 (Duration: 15 mins)

?I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

? you can?t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something ? your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life?

Your time is limited, so don?t waste it living someone else?s life.

Don?t be trapped by dogma ? which is living with the results of other people?s thinking. Don?t let the noise of others? opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.?

Randy Pausch

?We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.?? Randy Pausch

?What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn?t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

But the lecture he gave??Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams??wasn?t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because ?time is all you have?and you may find one day that you have less than you think?). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.? Amazon Books review

Home Businesses and You

There are plenty of things to think about when you are setting up a business from home and selling merchandise. Storage is one of the most important considerations. Moving pods are perfect for storage that can be kept on your property. This helps to de-clutter your home, as well.

Starting a Home Business

It may seem intimidating when it comes to opening up a home business, but it can be much easier when you have the best people in your corner and a few tips. The best way to do this could have a wonderful mentor that can tell you and show you all of the important things that you need to know about building a business.

A mentor with a great track record will be an added bonus to your start up. They can tell you want to look out for and what to avoid. This needs to be someone that you can rely on. This will help you grow into the best business owner that you can possibly be. Just remember that putting the work in is the most important part. Starting a new business takes up a lot of time, so work ethic and devotion is truly conducive to your success. Consider going into business with a partner, it is always good to have someone that is on your side throughout the course of the business' life. They need to be reliable and just as devoted as you are, you don't want to end up doing most of the work and having them reap the benefits from your blood, sweat, and tears.

When it comes to the products you intend on selling, please have faith in your product. That is the most important part. You need to know these products inside and out. You need to know what your products are made from, why they are beneficial to your intended target group, and you are going to need to simply know everything about them. That is the bottom line. This is so you can tell your potential customers or clients why they need these products in their lives. Being a fantastic salesperson comes with the knowledge of the product and being prepared to answer any and all questions that are thrown your way.

You are going to need to build a brand name and website so that you can attract customers from all over the country or even the world, dependent upon the services you intend on providing. Buy your domain name and start the building. You could either hire professionals to build your website or if you have the talents, you could build your own. It is important to keep the layout as clean and easily navigational as possible, so that people A) want to buy from you and B) want to keep coming back. No one likes a cluttered website and messy layouts just look unprofessional.

We are assuming that you have a business plan laid out already. It is important that you follow through on every single goal that you make within this business plan. This ensures your success as long as you have a thorough business plan. Thinking about all of these aspects of starting a home business entails intricacies on most levels. You are the boss and the owner, you are going to have to think about absolutely everything on your own until you have become successful enough to hire other people.

Just remember that you can have some moving pods for storage and pay attention to your business plan and things should be okay.

I'm a home moving professional with a passion for writing about portable storage. To learn more about moving services, please visit my website.

Italian museum sets its art on fire to protest lack of government funding

Contending that it would be 'destroyed anyway' because there is no money for preservation work, the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum is burning a piece of its contemporary art collection every day.

By Giulia Lasagni,?Contributor / May 11, 2012

Antonio Manfredi (l.) director of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum, and Italian artist Rosaria Matarese burn one of Matarese's creations in front of the museum, near Naples, Italy, Wednesday, April 18. Manfredi is burning paintings to protest a shortage of funds. Italy's museums have been strapped for funds for decades, but art world officials say the economic crisis has aggravated the plight.

Perhaps not, but it?s certainly a powerful wakeup call to a government and populace busier worrying about the euro crisis and unemployment statistics.

So says Antonio Manfredi, the director of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum (CAM), which is located in a small town near Naples, Italy. A little less than a month ago, Mr. Manfredi started to burn the gallery?s collection piece by piece, saying that he didn't have the funds for upkeep. ?Our artworks will end up being destroyed anyway, since institutions are not sustaining us,? he told?Italian daily Corriere della Sera before starting the protest.?

The first to go?was ?Promenade,? a canvas by French artist Severine Bourguignon, who approved of the protest and followed it on Skype. ?I hope that this action will help the Italian government reconsider CAM's situation,? she wrote?in The Guardian. ?Without funds, CAM will be closed and its collection will effectively cease to exist.?

Bourguignon?s piece was followed by many others, as meticulously recorded on CAM?s Facebook page.

Some contended?that the protest is only the provocative performance of an attention-seeking artist ? Manfredi is himself a painter, sculptor, and photographer?? and that because CAM is not technically a public museum, the government doesn't have to support it (although most private museums also receive some funding from the Ministry of Culture).?

But there is no doubt that Italy?s culture sector has been hit hard by cuts because of the economic crisis.?The Italian daily Republica reported?that between 2010 and 2011 the Ministry of Culture?s funding saw a 14.5 percent decrease, dropping from 1.7 million ($2.2 million) to 1.5 million euros.

Despite its world-class cultural wealth, Italy invests in the culture sector less than other countries. According to a government report, in 2010 the Ministry of Culture received only 0.21 percent of the country?s budget (compared, for instance, to 1 percent in France). It?s no surprise then that several prestigious institutions are going through a rough time.?

MAXXI, Rome?s contemporary museum, which opened only two years ago, has predicted losses of 11 million euros for 2012 through 2014. Naples?s and Parlermo?s contemporary art museums are also in deep financial trouble.

In the meantime, some organizations representing workers in the culture sector are protesting against low wages and the lack of adequate benefits. In a letter recently published in Corriere della Sera, they stressed the importance of what they do, which they say goes well beyond the workplace. ?We produce intangible but necessary goods on a daily basis: intelligence, relations, social welfare,? they wrote.

Investing in culture is also the recipe called for by renowned writer Dacia Maraini, who in a recent trip to the United States was surprised by the interest Americans still have in Italian culture and history. ?Shouldn?t we focus obstinately on what we can do best instead of competing with China in producing cheap jeans?? Maraini recently wrote in Corriere della Sera.

Good news about foreclosures - Mayes Harris Team Real Estate

I?ve been hearing and reading reports about the foreclosure rates declining across America (evidently rates are at a five-year low), which is good news overall.? It means that Americans are feeling more confident and able to keep up with their mortgage payments, making good decisions, and that the overall real estate market will be on an incline.? Major markets like Baltimore, Atlanta, Phoenix, Denver, areas on Florida?s gulf cost, are all reporting decreases in foreclosure rates, so other areas, in theory, should follow.? This all bodes well for a healthy economy and improvements in real estate.

With this good news in mind, I?d like you to take a moment to reflect on the holiday we?re about to celebrate.? Please give thanks to anyone you know who has served or is serving our country.? Please hang your flag with pride.

Happy Memorial Day!

Explode Your Network Marketing Business By Beating Your ...

Thursday, May 24th, 2012 at 9:29 am ?

No Excuses Summit 3 is still fresh in my mind and the high-energy presentation by boy-genius Russel Brunson was a highlight.

Russell taught a ton about paid ads and how to use them but there is one nugget that inspired today?s post:

One of the most effective places to advertise are conservative news and conservative talk radio websites and outlets.

No political opinion here?it?s just a fact that more conservatives are interested in finding network marketing success than other groups in the political spectrum (but certainly not the only ones?.)

And I know, from decades of personal experience, that conservatives listen to talk radio.? Lots of talk radio?

It?s quite easy to find local or nationally syndicated talk radio shows on from 0?dark-thirty in the AM until late at night, or even around the clock.? These shows are chock-full of all the political minutia and details that, frankly, you just don?t need to know.

You really don?t want to introduce politics to your public persona.? It?s polarizing and it will limit the reach of your influence.? You are here to help everybody, regardless of their political leanings.

Look?you really want to know who to vote for?? Go online and look at their voting record, find the ones who vote for the stuff you believe in, and vote for them?don?t listen to their marketing -look at their record.

If you are serious about creating a life-changing income with your network marketing business then it?s time for entrepreneurial immersion in the stuff that is going to create the thoughts and actions that lead to your success.

One successful method to beat an addiction (and let?s face it?talk radio is an addiction?) is to replace the addiction with something else that is more inline with who you want to be.

May I suggest the Home Business Radio Network?

An absolutely FREE resource with how-to, industry news updates and mindset programming.? 24/7 content that you can access to uplift, inspire and educate?

As you plan your day, prospecting-marketing-training your team-following up with leads-your company training calls-etc, the Home Business Radio Network is a much healthier filler than most other options.

I don?t have a dog in this fight?no affiliate link?no back-end profit?it?s just a tip to help you fill your life and mind with the stuff that will make a difference in your network marketing business.

I?d love to hear your feedback about the shows on the Home Business Radio Network and how listening affects your mindset?

The discovery of a secret baby threatens Caleb's professional reputation. Falling for the woman who loves this baby would ruin him.

Marriage therapist Caleb Paden has just found out he has a son from a one-night stand, making a mockery of his core belief of stable relationships??friendship above all physical encounters.? On his way to take the child for a paternity test, a snowstorm leaves him stranded with single mom Olivia Wells, who blames his advice for breaking up her marriage. Caleb finds himself fighting the urge for the most basic of physical encounters. Olivia would like nothing more than to destroy the career he spent a lifetime building, but her maternal instincts draw her to help Caleb bond with his child. Soon, she finds herself falling for both of them. Nowhere in any of his advice does Caleb have an answer for how to make a relationship work if he loses his heart to love.

What makes a good marriage? Wouldn't it involve love, attraction, and passion? A solid friendship, trust, and respect? One would think so. Marriage isn't supposed to be all business-like. Even a marriage of convenience has a bit more than a business feel to it. But for one man, he builds his life around marriages. How they work. How they should work. The one major element he leaves out of it-emotion.

Meet Dr. Caleb Paden. He's successful. He's a public figure. Well known. You'd think he has it all. But there is so much to Caleb that many don't know. Inside Mr. Forever, readers get a glimpse at the man who strives to fix everyone's marriage with his theories. I think someone needs to teach him some new theories about what makes a true marriage work. I have some strong issues with Caleb. He shows no emotion. He detaches himself from everything and everyone. He puts his life into his Forever career, but how can he have any ideas if he's never been there himself? I found him to be very condescending. He puts those around him under scrutiny, and that makes me cringe. Though it's not a good reaction I have towards Caleb, it shows that the author has really put a lot of thought into his character. He felt very real to me. I could relate his personality to people I know. Does he drive me batty? Yes, but if I spent time considering his character and relating to him then the author did her job of pulling me into the story.

The heroine is Olivia. I admire her strength and stamina to handle a man like Caleb. She's had a tough time in her life, but she doesn't sulk over it. She has a son to raise and she's very determined to make a better life for other children, as she'd like to become a foster parent. Olivia is the character I related to the most. Caleb questioned many of her actions, and though she did not have to explain herself, or defend herself, she does. Yet she has feelings and an attraction for him. I hoped from the very beginning that she would be able to make Caleb see the light, otherwise I wasn't sure how they'd ever work!

My feelings are mixed about this story. Mostly about Caleb. I really wanted to throttle the man! He irritated me so. The characterization for everyone is strong, the plot had great pace. There's even a second romance weaved into the pages, and I would have loved to read more about that. Ms. Daniel makes the characters stand out, the situations can be so true to real life and that's the big thing I enjoyed about the story. The emotional dynamics of the book were built up on. Both Caleb and Olivia had some deep soul searching to do. Especially Caleb. He'd come a long way, and eventually I found him redeemable.

Overall, this book really kept me engaged. The writing is fresh, there's some touching and funny moments, and I was glad to read it. If you're a contemporary romance fan, why not get your Mr. Forever today?

Sharon Stone sued by former nanny

Matt Sayles / AP

By TheWrap.com

Sharon Stone's basic instinct might be a little bit off ??at least when it comes to how to treat the help.

"Casino" actress Stone is being sued by a woman claiming to be her former nanny, who says that Stone made disparaging remarks about her ethnicity and religious beliefs, and illegally fired her for receiving rightfully obtained overtime pay.

Erlinda T. Elemen claims that she began working for Stone in October 2006, and was promoted to head nanny of the actress' three children in September 2008.

In the suit, Elemen says that she would often deride Elemen's Filipino background, telling Elemen not to speak to the children because she didn't want them to "talk like you," making derogatory comments about Filipino food, and making comments "which equated being Filipino with being stupid."

The suit also claims that Stone "criticized Plaintiff for frequently attending church and, on one occasion, forbade Plaintiff from reading the bible in Plaintiff's room in Defendant's residence."

Stone's publicist has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

Elemen says that she was fired in February 2011, after refusing to return overtime pay that she'd earned while traveling with Stone's kids and on other occasions such as holidays. According to the suit, Stone accused her of "stealing" the overtime pay from her and told her it was "illegal" for her to receive the pay.

Alleging harassment, failure to prevent harassment, retaliation and wrongful termination, Elemen is seeking unspecified damages.

Elemen's attorney, Solomon Gresen, told TheWrap that he hopes the suit will draw attention to the broader issue of overtime pay for domestic employees.

"A common problem for employees in household occupations concerns the receipt of overtime and other wages," Gresen said. "When a celebrity does it, it only serves to draw attention to the fact that there are thousands of people who are being underpaid. Hopefully, the publicity generated from this lawsuit will be of benefit to others and will prompt some change in the lives of ordinary citizens."

Gresen added, "It's unfortunate when a California employee has to endure harassment, particularly a live-in employee who has little power to avoid the behavior."?
